Tourist entry
US citizens get a 30-day visa on arrival ($30, cash USD) or an e-visa in advance. Extensions at the Mogamma-style passport offices are a rite of passage.
Long stay / nomad / residency
Long-term residency is typically via property purchase, proof of income, or study. Many Western families live on rolling tourist renewals or 1–5 year 'non-tourist' residencies arranged through local agents.
Student pathways
A huge draw: Al-Azhar University and countless Quran/Arabic institutes sponsor student visas, and students can sponsor dependents.
Work pathways
Work permits exist but wages are local; nearly all American moms here live on US remote income or savings.
Health insurance: No insurance mandate for entry or typical residencies. Carry international cover with evacuation; you'll pay cash for routine care and love the prices.
