Tourist entry
US citizens get a 30-day Visa on Arrival (~$35), extendable once for 30 more days. The B211A visit visa allows 60 days, extendable to 180.
Long stay / nomad / residency
KITAS temporary residence permits come via work, marriage to an Indonesian, retirement (55+), or the newer Second Home Visa (requires proof of ~$130k in funds or property).
Student pathways
Student KITAS via universities and Islamic boarding schools (pesantren) — a serious option for families seeking immersion.
Work pathways
Work KITAS is employer-sponsored with government quotas; most American moms use visit visas, spouse sponsorship, or remote income.
Health insurance: Long-stay routes (B211A sponsors, Second Home Visa) typically require health insurance proof. The 30-day VOA isn't checked — carry it anyway.
